THE STELLINE FOUNDATION, MILAN
WILL HOST THE LIGHT INSTALLATION
'DREAMS OF A POSSIBLE CITY'
BY MASSIMO UBERTI
IN THE MAGNOLIA CLOISTER
Italy (March 11, 2008) - From 16 April up to 16 October 2008 the Stelline Foundation, a well-established institution in Milan, whose reputation as a benchmark for contemporary art exhibitions is unquestioned, will host the light installation 'DREAMS OF A POSSIBLE CITY' in one of its most enchanting locations: the Magnolia Cloister.
Produced by Fondazione Stelline in partnership with the leading financial security company Genworth Financial, the initiative is realized with the patronage of Regione Lombardia and Comune di Milano, and is one of the most eagerly awaited events timed to take place during the Fuori Salone at the Salone del Mobile – Milan International Furniture Fair.
Massimo Uberti, a leading light artist, has chosen the cloister as the most suitable venue to house his large light installation 'DREAMS OF A POSSIBLE CITY'. Tending to the infinity (27 metres in diameter and 14 metres high). 'DREAMS OF A POSSIBLE CITY' by Massimo Uberti is a site specific installation, realized with white neon sources suspended in the sky into a continuum with the stars in the night sky above. Massimo Uberti’s site-specific project is a dream of an infinite ideal city, whose star shape is reminiscent of the layout of Sforzinda, the ideal city designed by Antonio Averlino, known as Filarete, around 1465.
White neon was chosen as a luminous symbol of our cities’ modern, nocturnal vitality, so that once observers have entered the cloister’s courtyard, they will find themselves inside the embrace of a geometry typical of a world of the past, one that is far away from us and yet uncannily familiar.
Uberti tells a dream from Renaissance and creates an ideal space: venturing on the ideal possible city each spectator encounters his sensitive, emotional side and feels a sense of wide beauty. The architecture is archaic and contemporary at the same time, featuring lines that stand for the streets of a possible city whose rhythms are marked by light. A city at which centre is the man still able to dream and to look upwards.
Together with the event there is a full calendar of collateral events, like the project organized with schools in Milan, called to express on the possible city issue. All works will be examinate by a quality jury and expose in the “Wall of dreams” prepared in the Magnolia cloister. And more over thanks to the cards available at the Stelline Foundation or on the www.unacittapossibile.com web site, all people can dream their possible city, can describe it and contribute to the project.
Massimo Uberti was born in Brescia in 1966; he trained in Milan with the artists of the group working in Via Lazzaro Palazzi; his output has been described and analysed by important curators and critics, including Sergio Risaliti, Laura Cherubini, Francesco Bonami, Bettina della Casa and Ludovico Pratesi. Uberti has attained extensive recognition both in Italy and elsewhere in the world, in particular representing Italy at the Ev+A 2003 Limerick exhibition of visual art (Ireland, LCGA), curated by Virginia Perez-Ratton, while his works figure in important collections both at home and abroad.
